If I think through my makeup routine, I probably wouldn’t highlight mascara as a favourite but there’s no denying that it pulls everything together. Even on those no-makeup, makeup days, this is one step that you can’t skip (sorta like eyebrows). You can have the most beautiful skin base and the most gorgeous eye shadow but without a coat of mascara to bring your lashes to life, it just won’t look complete.

Over the years I’ve found some true gems of mascaras but I think 2017 took the crown when it came to ones that I tried and fell in love with! In case you were wondering, you’re supposed to toss mascara after three months but who am I kidding, these will be in my makeup arsenal for a little longer than that.

If you’re on the hunt for a good mascara and aren’t sure where to start, here are 3 that I’d recommend.

Maybelline Falsies Push Up Angel Washable Mascara

I’ll be honest, the first time I pulled this mascara out of it’s tube, I put it right back and didn’t touch it for about a week. I’d never seen a slender application wand in all my years of using makeup but once I tried it the first time, I was hooked. The short bristles make it easy to start applying mascara right from the root of your lashes without worrying about transfer (brilliant for those who seem to smear mascara on their eyeshadow – eek!).

It doesn’t go on clumpy, separates the lashes beautifully and you can easily apply several coats to get the effect you like! Bonus points for also helping lift your lashes which is great for someone like me who’s never quite gotten the hang of an eyelash curler. It’s also easy to apply on your lower lashes.

I’d give this 4.6 stars.

Lancome Grandiôse Mascara

I actually stumbled upon this mascara in 2016 and I’ve got to say, it came through for me for a good chunk of last year. It’s swan neck wand is made to fit your face making application a breeze.

The mascara stays put throughout the day and happens to be easy to take off at the end of it too which is ideal for someone with a baby and has all of 30 seconds to get makeup off. For best results, I’d recommend 2 coats.

I’d give it 4.4 stars.

Diorshow Pump N’ Volume Mascara x Diorshow Maximizer 3D Triple Volume Plumping Lash Primer

This is by far the combo that I’d reach for whenever I really wanted to make a statement – I just wish it was easier on the pocket. The real start here though is the primer which still works great when paired with other mascaras so if you want to be a little more forgiving on your wallet, opt for the primer first and use it with your current mascara.

That being said, there’s a reason this duo is sold as a pair – the pump n’ volume mascara does have fibers on it that elongate your lashes and leave you looking like you’ve got a pair of falsies on. So if you’ve got some cash to spare, go for the combo! I’d give this combo 4.8 stars.

*Honourable Mention: Maybelline The Colossal Go Extreme Volum’ Mascara

It’s bright yellow tube makes it hard to miss and I can say the same for its effect on lashes. It’s easy on the wallet, does a lot for your lashes and it’s going to be easy to spot when rammaging through your bag for a quick coat!

I am always the one encouraging others to try new brands etc but I always stick to the tried and tested and change is not something I am fond off. I have been using Maybeline fan not because they are affordable and easily accessible, almost everyone I know has used them. Maybe when the coins are right one can find the courage to branch out 🙂
