There’s really nothing like being woken up by a bellowing school of hippos at 6am in the morning.

Mara was so good to me and even though I didn’t get to see all of the Big 5 (that darn elusive leopard), I got to dine out in the wild in the company of friends and enjoy the last moments of a beautiful sunset in the warmth of a beautiful fire. I also got to go inside a manyatta for the first time in my life, fell off a bike in the most hilarious way and sprained my arm (which I talk more about in the Maasai Mara Travel Diary video) and learned so much about wildlife thanks to the best safari tour guide in the world. No kidding, if you’re headed to the Mara, you want to ask for Anthony Kamau. You can thank me later.

It’s funny. From the conversations I’ve had, there seems to be two kinds of people: (1) those who’ve never been to the Mara; and (2) those who’ve visited 15,000 times. Susan Wong and Tatiana Karanja fell in the latter and as this was my very first time, well you can guess where I fall.

I had such a memorable time out there and I’m so glad I got to explore the conservation with people I’ve grown to really care for! Special thanks to Fairmont Mara and AirKenya Express for making this trip a reality.

I can’t wait to go back and if you haven’t visited, I’d definitely recommend it!
